The World of Warcraft Warlock Starter Guide

My WoW warlock guide should get you headed in the right direction when you are starting out with a warlock. Warlocks are masters of the black arts with the ability to control fire, shadows and demons. The spells available to the warlock class are primarily focused on inflicting excruciating pain and anguish. They are able to hurl potent spells from a distance, but are not equipped for fighting up close since they lack any real physical defense. Several talents require the utilization of soul shards, which warlocks have to acquire by killing enemies. The warlock class is a breeze to level up in a hurry due to the fact that they are extremely self sufficient when soloing. They are typically among the top DPS dealing classes when in a raid.

The only races allowed to be warlocks are Blood Elves, Humans, Undead, Gnomes, and Orcs. The single kind of armor a warlock may wear is of the cloth variety. As far as weapons go, warlocks are restricted to using only wands, staves, swords and daggers.

Warlocks are best known for their ability to summon and control a variety of demonic minions including Imps, Voidwalkers, Succubi, Felhunters, Infernals, Doomguards, and Felguards. Every minion has unique benefits that you can exploit. Warlocks boast a wide array of magic spells at their disposal including DoT’s, direct damage spells, and several utility spells. Soul shards may be used for conjuring various items and even for resurrecting your dead teammates. They are able to heal themselves via life tap and drain life, and also possess some crowd control spells (CC’s) such as fear or howl of terror. One of the commonly overlooked perks that warlocks have is that they don’t have to pay nearly as much as other classes do to acquire their mounts (Dreadsteed and Felsteed).

Affliction talents are designed to bolster a warlock’s DoT’s, drains, and curses. This talent spec is good for farming, boss killing, and raiding. This is commonly acknowledged as being the best leveling spec for warlocks.

The Demonology specialization focuses mostly on spells and bonuses for your summoned demons that make them stronger and more lethal. For PvP, this is a an excellent spec. For power leveling, it is just a notch below Affliction. This talent tree can be used during early levels to help make up for a lack of decent spell damage loot.

The Destruction specialization increases the direct damage capabilities of both your shadow and fire group of spells. Your warlock will do incredible amounts of damage, but you will have lower survivability. This talent tree can be hard to use at low level and is more often played once players get to higher levels. Note that Destruction is not good for solo play. Also, keep in mind that it suffers from low mana efficiency and has a heavy reliance on farming soul shards. However, its very cool to watch health bars go to zero at lightning speed.
